Q: Will this preamp work with most mics with Shure TA4F connectors?

It didn't work for me because of the wiring differences on the mini connector.

Q: I'm only getting a signal if I turn my gain to max with phantom power on and getting a lot of noise. Am I missing something?

My guess would be that the converter is not getting enough power via phantom power. I also have to run my gain at a higher side, but after a little tweaking it's normally fine. It might also be a combination of whatever microphone you're using and your phantom power. Hell, it's also possible that some of the sound you're hearing is the power in the XLR cable which means you have a cable that's going bad.
