Poorer quality than a less expensive part that looks the same.
This is the second gate closer I bought through Amazon of the same general design. I had bought the Hardware Essentials closer originally: It worked well and installed easily. When I bought a second a couple of months later, I found this brand and assumed was the same product: It isn't. I failed to look at my orders to ensure that I was getting a duplicate. And, unfortunately, it cost $6 more, an added insult. Both adjust with a bolt on top - you turn it to tighten the tension. Both use a very small piece of metal as a stop to hold the nut used to tighten the spring, but this one lacks a small detent to hold it in place when it is inserted so it wobbles - when using one hand on the wrench and the other to slide in that piece, it moves around, and is a nuisance. It probably added a nickel to the cost to make. This one also feels like its tolerances are those, so it feels cheaper when you hold it.

Comes apart if you follow instructions
I followed the mounting instructions, angling the top to the right. But, tensioning the unit required me to rotate the top nut in the opposite direction indicated. After a couple of openings, the top nut came loose from the spring and lost its tension. I put the spring in a vise, pounded the nut back into the spring, and got the same results. The problem is that if you follow the instructions, the top nut rotates in a direction that LOOSENS the spring which holds in it place. The solution is to angle the top to the left. Then the top nut rotates in a direction that TIGHTENS the spring.Maybe a batch came from the factory with the spring wound in the wrong direction, I don't know. Check yours out before you install it, it's easy to visualize if you rotate the spring in your hand as if the gate were opening.

High quality, instructions for loading the spring seem backwards
Followed instructions to install and it fell apart as I was loading the spring. I read a few other reviews that mentioned the tightening instructions were backwards. Bought it to replace a similar steel, rusted spring for a coastal property gate. I couldn't put it back together. Will try to get my maintenance tech out to give it a try. It appears high quality and should work with proper installation.

I like these; they do the job.
These are replacements for a pair that broke due to improper installation. Properly installed, these are great. Just be sure to read and follow the instructions.

JUST DON’T
I have now purchased and broken four of these, the welds are so poor they cannot be tightened without snapping loudly and scaring yourself and the neighbors. I now have purchased two spring-loaded hinges, will update this post when things shake out…

DO NOT BUY THIS
Do not waste your money. Lug at the bottom falls out and can’t be tightly replaced - even if it could, it does spin a senior by others. Wish I could bill makers for the holes left on my lovely gate. Would like to challenge makers to assemble this in front of me. Utter junk.
