30 Days to a Well-Mannered Dog: The Loved Dog Method

This should be required reading before you get a dog!!!
This book completely changed how I interact with my dogs. I want everyone in the world to read this book and treat their dogs better. My mom gave me this book to read and I read it outloud to my husband on a long roadtrip. He was completely changed by it as well. I think we both just kind of had an epiphany while reading and trying to understand what she is saying in this book. This book is a better outline on how to train your dog and leaves out a lot of the biography that is in the first book (brown book), but like the first book this is a book that tries to explain how to treat your dog and why. The process can't be a bulleted list. Its not a list because its real life and requires real dedication and daily love. After reading this book, I realize that I don't have to raise my voice or use physical punishment like I've been told by "trainers." I have an English bulldog and I had an incredibly hard time training him despite the help of multiple "trainers." At the age of 4 and 5 he was still having accidents in the house despite using the methods they recommended. The truth is that yelling, screaming, hitting, shoving his nose in excrement and acting like a psycho is the wrong way to communicate. All the while he wasn't getting enough interaction, mental stimulation, and exercise (bulldogs are not actually lazy and mine happens to be really smart). Now I understand why this never felt like a natural way to interact with him and I can see now that it was hurting my relationship with him. I don't have to prove that I'm the alpha because he already wanted me to be the alpha - instead I was some crazy lady he was forced to live with. I am so glad that I was given this book before I adopted our 2 french bulldogs. I really feel like we have an understanding and a deeper relationship - one that my English bulldog (now 8 & 1/2) has also benefitted from. I can see a world of difference in him - one that comes from being free to express my love and affection for him without worrying about what the trainers told me to do. I focus more on his happiness and make sure his needs are being fulfilled. I bought 10 more books and sent them to my mom for her to give to others who would read this book and change their relationship with their wonderful dogs for the better. I truly believe that dogs are God's most perfect image of angels - that they are sent here for us to love and protect - that he entrusts their souls to us. If we can be even a little bit as good as our dogs are, then we will be closer to heaven. My dogs fill a void in my life that humans could never, and I owe the ability to have a loving relationship - that doesn't involve brutal training methods - to Tamar Gellar and this wonderful book. I promise you that these methods work - much like teaching a child in an encouraging environment. I often visualize my dogs as a child that doesn't speak English - this allows me to be patient with them - and completely amazed when they display their brilliance. It is real love and, truthfully, so much fun to explore the world with them in this way. Thank you again Tamar for writing this book and changing the world with your message.

Well worth the read and the effort
We have several dogs, a 3 year old lab, 2 4 month old lab mixes, and a 4 month old pug/shitzu mix. We bought these books to educate ourselves on how to calm our home when they are all inside. The larger dogs spend a lot of time in the yard but we want them to spend their evenings with us in the living room and we didn't want to worry about them being so hyper when we let them in. The skills we learned from this book helped us solve the problem. We now happily enjoy a lot more time with all of them and they are not afraid of us. We don't have to yell or panic we can just say "Sit" or "Off" or any of the other commands and they comply willingly. The 2 young labs will run for their kennels when we say "load up" and sit quietly while we close the door and tuck them in at bed time. We are still working on a few things but the first several lessons are well in play and working like a charm! Thank you Tamar Geller for teaching us a better way to live with the dogs we love.

Should be REQUIRED READING for anyone getting a dog!
From the first time I read 'The Loved Dog' in 2007 I knew that Tamar Geller was a woman after my own heart. Her attitude toward dogs and her training methods so closely match how I feel and what I've always done with my dogs. After getting a new puppy recently (after not having a puppy in almost 15 years!) I knew I needed a refresher so ordered '30 Days...' and it has been such a blessing. My little girl is only 4 months old, but with Tamar's guidance she is already learning to become an extremely well mannered girl! She has learned to sit and wait patiently for her supper, lay down, sit up like a pretty girl and is now learning to speak and stay. While working at the public Library I recommended for many years that anyone getting a new doggie addition to their family should get a copy of 'The Loved Dog' but I will now add to that advice and recommend '30 Days to a Well Mannered Dog!' Thanks, Tamar!

Where has this book been all my life?
I loved this book so much I ordered a 2nd copy for my dad (well for his 50lb, 19 week old furbaby). This book was my bible for bringing home my 8 week old Shiba Inu. 3 weeks later, only one accident in the house, she knows sit, down, shake & high five. Still on step two of leave it & stay is a bit of a struggle. This book is great, while there are plenty of step by step instructions, it's really more about forming a bond with your dog and how to work with their personality to teach them to override that wolf instinct. The other great thing about this plan is she never assumes you have 18 hours a day to spend training your dog. It's very practical & simple and it may just change the way you think about your relationships with people too. If your dog is 8 weeks or 8 years I highly recommend this book. I just wish I had known this method 14 years ago when my last dog was a puppy.

Unless all you do is work your dog this book isn’t helpful.
I’ve tried applying these teachings to my new puppy. None of them have worked.

Useful and insightful book
It is a well written, useful book and insightful book. I do not necessarily agree with everything she says but overall it is a very useful book and one of the better ones I've used. I have two young puppies and the 30 days is a bit quick for them. I have trained a retriever in the past with better luck using an old book that unfortunately I don't remember the name or author. Some of the techniques the author uses did not work with my pups.

Lots of good ideas
We got this before bringing our new pup into our home. There is lots of good advice and many good ideas, most of which seem to work.If you have never had a puppy, or have had one and were not happy with how you were able to train him/her, this book is a sound investment. You are unlikely to regret getting it and reading it. Ditto for your dog.Would have liked to have had it when we got our first dog many, many years ago.

Loads of Excellent Advice! Her Methods Do Work!
I found everything in the book worked like a charm. The only reason I did not give a 5 star for this book was the fact that one has to read a lot of chit chat before getting to the information you need now. Nice stories but too long. I prefer instruction books to have more instruction then story telling. Other than this, its the only book I would suggest for dog training. The advice it excellent.
